Understand my beliefs please
I think part of the problem that is going on here is that the bulk of you are ignorant as to the word of God. I don’t have these beliefs just because I want to, I have them because they are the beliefs that I was raised in. I understand that everyone didn’t have the chance to be taught these things, and learn about God as my family did so if I am going to have this kind of attention I should use it to help teach others about the words of God that helped to shape me into the woman I am today.
Everyone I am sure knows the passage that in the beginning God created heaven and earth. But there is more then just this one that people remember.
In Genesis 1:2 there is more talk about God’s work. “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
So it’s clear that Earth was made by God’s hand, not science. From this God moved to creating all the creatures, notice there is never talk of creatures ‘evolving’ into other creatures, instead God is able to make the creatures as he will including man.
In Genesis 1:25-27 “25. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
People of science claim that the Earth is the way it is because of millions of years of time and science effecting it. But we are taught and believe that our world is this way and has the aged look because of the flood of Noah. It was the waters covering the Earth on such a grand scale that caused the aging that people of science claim as proof.
But in the Bible we are told in Genesis 6:7 “So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth–men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air–for I am grieved that I have made them.””
But the Bible teaches us that God was not done with man. For we were His creation and He then spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21-27 after the flood.

It’s these teachings that I’ve spent my life learning, believing and becoming, that have made me the woman that I am today.

Spore is an incredible achievement of interactive entertainment that should be applauded and heralded as such.
The sheer scope, vision and scale of the game is beyond anything ever, so yeah, stop being a prick and actually learn to appreciate something worth appreciating.

Without too much knowledge about the game to start with other than Leo Laporte et al. discussing it on their webcast, I’d think I have to agree with them that Spore is not an evolutionary game per se.
An evolutionary game would be very boring, because you wouldn’t have to do anything besides wait and see what happens. As I gathered, in spore you are required to make decisions about the direction in which your creature develops. That to me sounds more like an ‘intelligent design’ kind of environment than evolution.

Here’s my problem with this website. It seems anytime anything comes up that even insinuates that what the bible says might not be true, the Christians jump up like a bunch of over zealous crusaders of god and feel like they have to strike it down.
Spore is a videogame. It supports the theory of evolution in a creative way. A theory by the way that is supported by science which is based on facts and not just a book somebody wrote to maintain order in a time of chaos.
It is an unfortunate time proven truth that religion and open-mindedness do not go hand in hand. And for the record, I would like to point out that I find it funny and ironic that you call what Will Wright did “brainwash”.

You said you were raised with such believes. But it does not mean that you cannot overlook them when you become an adult. Noone tells you that you should abandon your religion but is this too difficult to open your mind for other things?
As an example: The co-worker of my husband grew up in a religious family, they were visiting church every Sunday, preying before dinner… the usual stuff. That man had(and has) an elder brother, who, at the age of twelve announced that he refuses to go to church. His parents shrugged their shoulders and approoved. The guy, being the age of eight, immediatly jumped in and said he does not want to do it too. On what he got answer: “Wait till you are the age of your brother and then we will hear you out.” My point being, a teenager overlooked his faith, even though he was being raised in religion and opened his mind. Why can’t you?

You read it in a book, created ages ago, in a time where people were ignorant and thought rain and thunder are anger/gift of a higher being. Book can carry any information, where is a proof? Lets say your god does exist (there is a possibilty, no proof, but its possible) and he hates evolution…. Why hasn’t he banned it then!? How can you talk about banning a game that just replicates something that happens in every day life (evolution). You cannot deny the existance of evolution anymore because it is observed every day. Evolution is the change of gene frequencies between generations in a population. If evolution doesn’t exist, then how do you explain dog breeding, or crop selection, or more natural every day examples such as drug resistent bacteria?
And really anti-spore, how are you going to try to say something is fact and true just because a thousand year old book says it is. Hell, if thats the case, shouldn’t everyone be spouting greek mythology as fact, or perhaps we should all be preparing for the yearly virgin sacrifices that need to be completed before autumn harvest!!!!

well you name it god, the science name it big bang. the result is the same. our world.

i would see it this way. the spirit of god or god himself ( the difference does not matter) are some kind of power we don’t or at least didn’t understand in the times the bible was written. i actually think, that the science today even don’t understand the power behind the big bang.

Spore is a game, a creation for our entertainment that embraces the evolution theory.
People who belivie in the evolution theory did not complain when Black And White was created and we were playing as God himself. Gamers around the world loves this game and it is no suprise what so ever that some christian fanatic have to complain. The evolution theory is the most logical explination to the creation of life here on earth.
Did you know that christianity is built on a long line of other religions?
That things like “The last supper”, “The ressurection” and “Easter” had been included in alot of other religions before it was written in the Bible?

BTW - If you want to spread knowledge hit a library. I’d recommend some reading in the areas of geology, human psychology, the study of ancient religions, the creation of the christian church, and hold on now… studies in the area of textual criticism of the bible.

I just want to say that your arrogance is amusing. I love how you create this negative framing of everyone that disagrees with your views.
Why can’t everyone just keep an open mind about this stuff or at least do what I do and consider both sides of the argument and have tolerance for people that view things differently to you. I’m sorry but the whole concept of science is that things are tested and proven. They don’t necessarily disprove god or his works or anything just because they don’t mesh perfectly with the literal translation of the bible.
There is no conspiracy among scientists to undermine the church or your beliefs, I can tell you now most of them couldn’t care less and don’t even think of religious beliefs when they carry about their work (ie. it’s unbiased and pure observation and reasoning)
Even then, I’m sure you have it in you to just accept Spore as a game/simulation of the theory of evolution without it being some sort of grand plot against God or negligence by christians, perhaps they just keep a more open mind to these things than you do.

I grew up Catholic. Never really stayed a good Catholic. And oddly enough nothing has changed except for having my Sunday’s free. I still believe in God. I believe that he is good and has blessed mankind with free choice. I also believe that everyone has a right to choose a faith and live by it’s standards so long as those standards do not harm, hinder or in any way judge others.

As a Christian, and believer in 6 day creation, I have no problems with Spore. Sure, it struck me as an off comment when I heard the commercial about creavolutionism. I’m not that easily offended however, and I don’t see Wil Wright as someone who is trying to subvert our beliefs and deceive our children. It is up to parents to teach their kids what they believe, and what is true and not. It is also up to the parents to teach their kids how to deal with things that irritate them, and creating a website that blows things so greatly out of proportion, IMO, is not it.

Belief in God is not incompatible with acceptance of science, such as evolution. That’s the problem I have with how you were raised. Chapter 1 of Genesis wasn’t meant to be a scientific paper. Listen, first of all, you’re making a large number of assumptions about your faith, and drawing conclusions about EA’s involvement in the spreading of the evolutionist theory. I am a Christian, and not just by word of mouth, either. You can trust me on that. I would not normally proclaim this, but I believe that you would discount what I have to say if I neglect to do so.
First, you need to realize that you cannot affirm that you are right and that everyone else that believes something different than you is wrong. Western culture is self-centered, and we tend to have this firm belief that we are always right and the other guy is wrong. This is not necessarily the case. Think on this: Tell me, where in the Bible does it say how God created the world? Where is the outline of his methods? Where is the timeline that says “although God is outside of time, He created the world in six days, by OUR measurement?” I don’t believe that it’s impossible to accept both creationism and evolutionary theory at the same time, while retaining the principles of my faith. To me, it also doesn’t matter if I’m wrong about how God did it. If I understood everything about God, I wouldn’t be human, would I?
Your “proof” is nothing of the sort. Have you ever taken a course in statistics? You have a sample of one individual, and you’re not looking into the details of that individual’s education, upbringing, or anything else. For all you know, that person could have been raised in a household that supports evolutionist theory in the first place. You ignorance and close-mindedness astounds me. If you ask me, you are also giving Christians a bad name, because it’s that kind of superior attitude and thought process that makes the world hate Christians as they do.

I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not you are serious here. If this is a joke, then I have to say, it’s quite well done!
But, just in case it isn’t, here’s my two cents:
First of all, I’m a fellow Christian, and I understand the desire to stand up for what’s right in God’s eyes. On the other hand, the Bible itself says that the secular world operates in a different way, and that we shouldn’t expect non-Christians to behave as Christians are commanded to.
That being said, I should tell you that I’m also a gamer, and have tried Spore myself. It’s just a fun game, and I don’t believe it’s any more insulting to God than Monopoly or Go Fish. If you do not wish to have the game in your house, then that’s fine, but I think that it’s not just unfair, but downright unbiblical to try and make non-Christians behave as if they were servants of Christ.
I think you need to also take a break from the computer. Perhaps taking a walk would be a good idea, methinks. Perhaps go to the park, and do some reading or writing..?

Now, the thing I do not like about you is your arguments. I would have hoped that you would come up with realistic arguments for your belief system, but this does not occur. In the hundred years christians have tried to prove that the earth is 6000 years old, that evolution is a fraud, that science is a lie, they have not achieved anything other that strenghtening scientific theories. I always find it funny with the first chapters of the bible, see you say it is all true and that, but just look at it. The first two chapters. First god creates adam and eve at the same time. in the second chapter he creates adam, then he does somethings and then he creates eve. What this site reinforces for me is that people who embrace religion to an extreme actually hurt their own cause. It’s actually pretty sad. I’m a Christian, and I play (and love) Spore. The game never once changed any of my personal beliefs. Evolutionary theory and religion can coexist–unfortunately a lot of religious extremists are quite narrow minded.

I think it’s funny how the only people that saw god after he rose from the dead were the people who wrote the bible. The only claims of evidence by religious “scientists” are to automatically assume that an unproveable entity exists and then create “evidence” around the unprovable entity. Even String Theory has more backing it up than creationism.

Then this is immediate affirmation that God did not create everything in the world. God in previous chapters only created Eden, not the world and the universe. when God said “Let their be light”, it could have been symbolic of actually switching on a light bulb or some other mysterious thing.

I have been raised a Christian too, and I know that about the first few books of the old testament, are not true. Adam represents man, Eve represents temptation and the Snake represents evil. I have been going to Catholic School for 13 years know. Priests and Nuns have taught me this.

What kind of authority do you have as a religious official that makes you believe that your beliefs and actions (the creation of this site and call of removing the video game Spore from stores) are right in the eyes of God? While it is the responsibility of Christians to spread the word of God to other people, it is NOT the responsibility of Christians to shove their beliefs down other peoples throats because a person doesn’t agree with the religious references made by someone else (in this case, the references to evolution and creationism found in Spore). Do you know why that is? It is because God gave free will to all people. That’s what great about both being Human and living in America. People are free to choose what religious preferences they want, and are free to express themselves. Banning the game Spore from store shelves would encroach on that American AND God-given right.
I can understand that the reason for your actions stems from your desire to shelter your children from something that you deem being unsuitable for your household. Now think about this: Would you want someone else telling you how to raise your children? Of course you wouldn’t - you have your own beliefs on how you want to raise your children. As far as knowing what your beliefs exactly are, you have yet to tell exactly what those religious beliefs are. You have said that you were a Christian, and that much is established. You have, however, not provided the public with your denomination. As you should be fully aware, while all Christians believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior, different denominations of the religion interpret the Word of God (The Bible) in different ways. Your speaking of God’s creation of man has caused me to remember something. What are 7 days to God? Before anything was created, time could not have been measured in the same sense that man measures time, because the Sun and the Earth had yet to be created. Thinking that Time has always been would be a fallacy to the Christian faith - therefore God created time, but when? The 7 days that God used to make everything may very well have not been seven days in the sense that Man measures 7 days. Again, this is all up to how a person interprets the Bible. Some people will agree with what I said (to allow both Religion AND science to be feasably correct), and some people will disagree and say that God gave the timeline in such a way that Man would understand it - 7 days.
In the post in which you congratulate yourself for getting a “nude” Spore creation, I have found several CRITICAL error’s in your logic. Yes, you posted a video of a game creation that was meant to resemble a nude women. What you did NOT do is indicate the username of the person that created the creation, you did NOT indicate where the creation could be found, and you did NOT indicate where you received this information. Any of that would be critical to directly link yourself to the removal of this creation. As could be seen in another post HERE on this site, Spore users have created millions of creatures (hence your post “Mr. Wright Strikes Again”). You ONLY provided a visual representation of one such creature that simulates nudity, it would be nigh impossible for EA and Maxis to scour it’s vast database for one such creation - unless, that is, EA and Maxis had already established their own methods of analyzing and removing creations that may be considered offensive. I can assure you that posting a YouTube video of a “nude” model is not an effective tool with which to search a database containing millions of pieces of content - so the only logical answer is one of two things. 1) Another Spore user saw the content, and through the use of the Spore website, submitted relevant data necessary to remove the creation from the database or 2) EA and Maxis have their own methods of screening for inappropriate content (which for millions of creations over the course of only about 2 weeks is no small task).
There are two posts here that discuss the problem of inappropriate content in the game. There is a HUGE problem with what you’re saying about the game. The way you’re representing the game, it’s as if you’re implying that players will without a doubt encounter these inappropriate creations, and that EA and Maxis encourage users to create these “nude” creatures. This is FAR from the truth. No nude or inappropriate game creature has come from, or is endorsed by the game’s creators. The only source of this inappropriate content is from immature end users that think that it’s funny to play through the game with a creature shaped to resemble genitalia. And as has been witnessed already, EA and Maxis have been working to remove this content from the accessible user-created content. Allow me to give an example of what is going on here. I’m sure we can all agree the Crayola makes their crayons for creative use on the part of the end users - people that want to draw and color. People are free to color and draw whatever they want: plants, animals, scenery, and - because they have a right to create what they will - genitalia (I’m certain you can see how I’m relating this to the ability of Spore players to create whatever they want). Sometimes those same people who think it’s funny to draw inappropriate pictures will also think it’s funny to put these pictures up where people can see them (related to the uploading of inappropriate content onto Spore’s internet servers). Now are we to go after Crayola for creating the tools that were used to create inappropriate images (Spore being the tools for creation)? No. We try to find who created the content and give them a slap on the wrists. Going after Crayola (EA and Maxis) wouldn’t solve anything, if the content in question was created by immature end-users.
From this site, I’m noticing a sizable amount of contempt for Will Wright. This is something that I’m having a huge problem seeing from a person claiming to be a good, Christian person. Will Wright is a person, just like everyone else. He has the same rights to believe what he wants, and he has the same rights to express his beliefs freely. He chose to express himself through creating a video game that had a strong basis in the concepts of evolution and creationism. How is it that he must be condemned for his choice to create a game that expresses his beliefs? Just because it doesn’t contain Christian values, it shouldn’t be banned from all people. And if you still think that is should be, an alternative view (doesn’t reflect my personal view but is to make a point): Because the movie Passion of the Christ contains Christian principals, I, as a muslim, believe that the movie should be removed from all store shelves because it is something that is against what I believe. (note: I am not a muslim, but am making a point regarding different religious views) It is impossible to argue with this logic. What you are asking is based solely on your religious preference and is against one of the fundamental values of living in the United States of America - the freedom to believe in and pursue whatever religious preference a person may want.
I have to address your desire to get the game removed through the means of a Court of Law. As I have already established, the desire to remove the game from store shelves stems from religious beliefs. That fact prevents an American Court of Law to enforce such a demand - due to the separation of church and state. The government cannot interfere with something based on it’s religious preference - the only exception being if the thing in question is a public nuisance and interfering with the operations of a business or establishment. And as for the claims that illicit content can be found in the game, I have also established that all content that could be considered inappropriate is created by end users, something that EA and Maxis has no control over. You have no claims with which would be sufficient to remove the game from store shelves. None.
Now I think it’s fair to tell you what kind of person I am. My mother took myself and my sister to our Lutheran Catholic church every Sunday right up until we moved when I was 10. Since then, my parents divorced and I’ve been forced to live with each parent have 50% custody - meaning I would stay with my mother one week and my father the next. Now I’m 18, sleeping on a couch at my grandfather’s in California’s Bay Area, going to college during the week and working to pay my bills on the weekend. My life is pretty chaotic, and I’ve been friends with people from every religion, every race, in all sort of economic standings. I have very little stability in my life, but the little I have I like to believe comes from the many viewpoints I’ve encountered as a result of my unstable lifestyle. Now I don’t much like spore, but I am a man of empiricism and science. And I know, as a psychologist, that religious beliefs are attributable to most cases of mental illness. I can also argue that many cases of mental illness are the result of emotional states (such as depression or anxiety) which are caused by irrational beleifs. Sometimes these irrational beleifs may be religious in nature. More-so if they are evangelical in nature and take written word literally.
That being said, I would highly suggest that all young earth creationists try to understand that truth is something that is based on rationality and not on something you read in a book that was written by some people in a desert who “created” a thing called morality that you apparently think is somehow tied to the text itself (even though you’re reading a poor translation of the written word at that). While you are entitled to your opinion, I also think that with freedom we must also have truth. The truth will set you free.
So… If you want to be free, beleive in truth. If you are a masochist and want to feel pain and live your short life in an oppressed and generally unhappy manner (like the blog writer here who seems to have a big problem with everyone) then by all means do let your beleifs prevent you from living your life to the fullest. But remember this:
If you can have the freedom to protest something, it should, just as much, be free to exist, be sold, and enjoyed by children. As children are innocent and don’t need to be tainted by the vile hand of irrational beleifs. These beleifs formulated in childhood will only lead to greater anxiety later in life.

Okay so I came across this website on a games review site and my first thoughts where rather humours, however… I strongly believe in evolution and class myself as an environmental scientist (I’m not a physicist, if I was I’d have a lot of theory’s and no proof) and I’m pretty active in some games.
So I bought spore and played it and yes…. it’s based on evolution but for one it’s not accurate and two it’s a game of enjoyment.
I DO believe in “god” to an extent, if you ask me if I believe that a man on a cloud created the world in 6 days and had a day off then no… Unfortunately I don’t believe that however I believe the interpretation of god can be used in many ways, a force, a being whatnot.
Evolution is the latest theory in the sack and has been for many years now (more than a fair few of *wink*) and its an extremely evidential point, we now have the technology to research these theory’s and prove or disprove them. I’m sure everyone has heard of the ALICE program going on by CERN, with this it will recreate the conditions after the big bang theory, this on its own will help prove the theory of evolution.
Science is now promoted throughout the world in schools as it’s the most logical response to what is going on, and if god did create us then I’m sure he/she/it will have expected for us to do this.
If you have an open mind then the theory of evolution should be at least considered, I respect all faiths, Christian, Muslim, Islam, ect ect ect but I believe it is unjust to attack a scientific theory which is based on logic and even more so through a game based for enjoyment.
I believe this is a “good game” because it does help with educational purposes! Every single human on this planet has the choice to choose what they believe in and I believe that strongly with the debate with evolution and god, if a child wishes to believe in god they may, if evolution they may, if both they may!
Something I was thought in the lab long ago was that both theory’s can worth together and scientists can believe in god just like anyone else.
I believe in why you’re standing up like this however I believe it is childish to attack the cooperation and in modern society it is a great shame to have a narrow minded individual. Please research your argument from both sides before making a debate on what is and what isn’t, beliefs are something we need but foolishness isn’t.
I just want to comment on the Noah thingy though, since around the 1960’s scientists (glaciologists) have taken core samples from the Arctic which basically allows us to step back in time and see weather and temperature conditions in the past from thousands of years ago… This also allows us to see climate changes like “flooding”. Also things about the water cycle and continuation of our present climate in the troposphere, the landscape can tell us much about how water has shaped the planet and unfortunately a great flood just doesn’t match up.
If it not up to me if someone believes in god or not but honest there is so much that people who strongly believe in this one single path should research on as it opens your mind up to so many ideas.
Spore is a fun and educational game (in a way :P) which allows you to relax, I would much prefer kids playing this then Shoot em up games before bed time! If I had the choice of my children becoming Scientists or mad raving lunatics with guns, I’d pick the first!

You can call us ignorant about the word of God, and we can call you ignorant about the discoveries of science. You are trying to disprove scientific evidence with stories from the bible while we are saying that scientific studies are more accurate than a book written thousands of years ago. It’s like saying that a thousand year old textbook is more accurate than a modern one; it makes no sense. Furthermore, you are trying to force your religious beliefs onto us while we are only trying to defend our right to believe what we want.
To further combat your tyranny, let me take your argument in pieces. You say that Earth was created by God, not science. Where’s the proof? Do NOT say that the bible itself is proof enough, I could take the book Harry Potter and say that that is evidence that Dementors exist, but everyone know they don’t. Using the bible as solid proof is the same as using a fictional novel as proof; it doesn’t prove anything.
Second, you say that God made every creature, no evolution involved. Well, does the bible talk of the dinosaurs? Fossils prove they existed, and if God make all the animals, then where is the talk of dinosaurs? And also, it is my understanding that cats are not mentioned in the bible. Do they not exist? Is my pet feline just a figment of my imagination? That right there proves the bible incorrect.
Third, you say that the Earth is the way it is due to the great flood. But that is not possible. There is no way that any man or group of people could have ever built a wooden ark large enough to support multiples of every single animal that existed at the time. Furthermore, even if such a large ark existed, how could it possibly float with that many creatures onboard? How would it have possibly been able to avoid leaks and breaks that would inevitably lead to its sinking? How could that many animals possibly have been able to live together for such a long amount of time in such an environment. And also, how could the ark have possibly been able to hold enough food and how would all that waste be removed in time to prevent massive outbreaks of disease? It’s just not possible.
Fourth, “Never truly believe anything you read on the Internet. There will always be cases of Poe’s Law.” Seriously lady, what the hell is this?
Now I suppose you could just say that all of these impossibilities are there because God willed it and science cannot prove God doesn’t exist. The problem with that is that no one can prove that God does exist. Furthermore, science has given a logical explanation for every single thing that the bible addresses, and the explanations of science make a hell of a lot more sense than the bible’s explanations. In addition, the bible fails to address many things that we know are true, and fails to give explanation for other things as well. Such as: if God gave man the power over the planet and its creatures, then why do we still fall prey to them? Such as deaths from wild carnivores, rabies from common mammals, the ever present malaria from mosquitoes in Africa, the dangerous allergies that make us wary of bees, etc… If God gave us control, then why are we still at the non-human animals’ mercies? And if evolution does not exist, then what of those fossils of pre-historic creatures? They certainly don’t look like our modern non-human animal companions. Where’s the bible’s explanation for that?
One last thing: Stop shoving your convoluted beliefs down our throats you bloody jerk. I have dis-proven each of your bible’s facts with the same science you consider so damn inaccurate that it simply must be incorrect. Do you really think that spreading the word of God will do this world any good? What has God ever done for the impoverished children of Africa and the Middle East? What has God ever done for the poor victims of animal cruelty? What has God ever done for peace? More wars have been started in the name of God than I can care to recall.
We understand your beliefs; it is quite clear to us that your a Christian extremist who’s grown up with these fairy tales. Now can you in turn understand that many of us don’t give a bloody care about your precious bible. The bible gets its trust from blind followers like you who take it too seriously; but we trust science because science has earned that trust through careful studies. Okay. Just wanted to mention that first of all, Spore isn’t an organized attack on christianity. It’s a computer game. Meant to entertain. Or do you think people are trying to pull off all entertainment media as fact? You might want to have a look at all the other thousands of games gaming industry have produced. Very, very few of them are based on any sort of fact.
Also, first of all, you seem to base your argument around the word of the bible, or as you call it, the word of god. In one case you quote Genesis 1:2, thereafter saying “So it’s clear that Earth was made by God’s hand, not science.”
No, it is not “clear”. The book says so, but there’s nothing that says the book sports facts rather than imagination. Also, who the hell ever claimed science created the Earth? Science is a term invented and created by man. Man did not create earth.
But alright, if you can use that book as a source, I can use any random Winnie the Pooh book as my source. Just because a book says something, doesn’t mean it’s true. And if you would argue that it does, then I’d happily refer you to various scientific texts you can read and “believe” in.
You also frequently say that things are your “belief”, and you ask us to understand those “beliefs”. Let me quote a dictionary for you:

God, however, is not confirmed to exist, and the words of the bible are not fact. That’s why you believe god exists rather than know he exists. No doubt my posting this will prove rather futile, since it seems a couple of hundred, if not thousand, people already beat me to it. But hey, I had nothing better to do.
I hope this cleared some things up for you, so you can stop with the whole irrational-rage thing. Also, please don’t pray for me. I’d quite frankly feel a bit offended if you did, since I don’t share your beliefs and don’t want you to speak in my name. Thoughts in order I had them:
1. its been well established (ancient Greece) that for a constructive argument to take place, two parties have to depart from an equal starting point. It seems that is impossible on the given topic. So what results is many people shouting in varying tones at one another. Through the internet.
2. The bible is poetic, historical and allegorical. One’s faith describes how one approaches various passages. Genesis can be seen to contradict itself, if taken literally, from one chapter to another. If you reference 2 Peter 3:8, it casts the Lord’s perception of time in a different scale. So I for one have problems taking a very literal interpretation of Genesis 1 and 2.
3. The anonymity of the internet has killed civility. I’m not even looking for pseudo-intellectual streams of vocabulary. Just some decency towards other people. People disassociated with social consequences for their statements show truly depraved natures. That’s a bummer, but not surprising, I guess.
4. Neither Science nor Religion can reach a declarative position on the beginning of time as we know it. Both Religion and Science approach the beginning of our time on faith that their current model is the most correct one. The difference is, Science keeps poking at it. Right now, its somewhat amusing that popular culture takes so much pop-science as fact. Alot of the people supporting evolution are actually laughed at by scientists, because actual studies and theories have shifted. Among other things, the more astronomers and physicists discover about our universe, the less it makes sense. As a result, they’re constantly restating theories, testing, and so on. This gives even their guesses a credibility amongst modern thinkers that the non-rigorous approach any meta-physical system takes lack.
Or: We can’t Identify 97% of the physical universe, but trust us, we’re right! (Not my quote. I got that from my Physicist Ph.D. college roommate.)

6. The heckler’s veto, the burden of faith, and society. On the internet, people shout and defame and use ad homonym attacks to silence those they disagree with. Referring back to point 1, since this is essentially an emotional argument, I guess that works as well as anything. I just find it amusing that one side yells at the other, “That’s not what I believe, You can’t say that!” You pick which side is which. In regards to those of you that ask Christians “keep your beliefs to yourself,” we can’t, sorry. To do so *is against our beliefs.* Some of us may be more annoying than others, but there’s alot of us, so you get that. I’m not sure how one reconciles telling someone to simultaneously keep their faith to themselves when that very faith demands proselytizing as a point of duty. My guess is they don’t.

7. God and Free will. Its a misguided perception that free will is without consequence. God does give us free will, but that decision always has consequences. Biblicaly, God gives us the opportunity to chose to do any number of things, and we do! But to expect that free will is to expect all of humanity to give license to proceed unchecked is ludicrous. Our society, (Okay, i guess I went back there) is -generally- steered by corporate interest, and the will of the masses, in that order. If, in some insane, post apocalyptic moment all of america leveraged their representatives to amend the constitution and make purple clothing mandatory, the desenting minority could chose to break that new law and wear blue, and face whatever insane punishments went with that.
I say that to say this: a person with a set of beliefs, whatever they may be, philosophically should absolutely attempt to legislate from those beliefs. To do anything less would be terribly hypocritical. Basically, put your money where your mouth is. Therefor, we get back to where I was before. People of non-belief, or scientific belief can no more expect a person of faith to not act on that faith, than they can expect others not to act on their own beliefs, how ever more substantial they may seem.

You realize the texts that you are quoting from your scriptures, while obviously not accurate seeing that you jokingly turned a 911 song into scriptures from Genesis 8 (which I find a bit shocking considering how devout you seem to be), were written and re-written over thousands of years by men. Men who were in powerful religious positions who’s primary goal was to control an ignorant population.
In modern times, information is readily available. (Granted, the entire world is not privy to the internet, but obviously, everyone here has that type of access.) Keeping people in the dark and telling them that there is some omnipotent being watching and judging us is just plain silly. Religion was, and still is, used as a form of control to keep the population under control. It’s like telling your children to behave all year long or Santa Claus won’t bring them presents.
I was raised in a Catholic family and I know all about “God”, what “God” stands for and why people believe in and worship “God”. But I’m sorry, “God” is just something that makes people feel a little better about themselves and a little less lonely at the end of their day. I don’t need “God” to feel good about myself or live a good life and treat the people I care about with love and respect.
Now, in all honesty, I don’t have a problem with religion. I truly don’t. I respect all religions. Even Scientololgy, which I view as one of least tempting religions, I have respect for them as a religious sect regardless of the fact that they believe the universe was farted out of Zenu’s rectum. Are you so blind that you think your religion is the one true faith? There are hundreds of different belief systems, and most of them are pretty similar in faith and lifestyle and some of them are pretty backwards compared to what Christians believe in.
What would you do if you ended up at the “Pearly Gates” and were greeted by a Buddah? Or what if the ancient Greek mythology were the true religion and there were many gods ruling over different domains?
With so many questions that have not been answered and cannot be answered, how can you say that your faith is the one and only true faith to follow?
You can’t.
All you can say is “This is what I believe.”
You cannot say “This is what I know.” because you don’t “know”.
Nobody “knows” what the “one true faith” is.
That’s why I don’t choose a faith or choose to believe in a “God”.
I believe in humanity, even though it’s not always good, it’s real and shown to me daily.
Heck, I would worship the Sun before I worshiped an invisible God. At least I know for a fact that the Sun exists and life on earth would not exist without the Sun. How much more powerful of a force could you ask for?
I mentioned that I do respect all religions, but I cannot have respect for the persons within those religions who are so pious that they are blinded by their own faith that they try to force it on the rest of us. Now, granted, I chose to visit this site out of my own free will because the controversy surrounding Spore fascinates me and since I’m a game developer, I find it grossly ignorant of you to rally against a game that has gone outside the box of what I consider standard game design and created a ground breaking title that is acclaimed by the industry.
Please re-think what you are doing here. In my opinion, you are not any better than how you view the games creator, Will Wright. Granted, Spore has a large advertising campaign which is reaching more people than your little blog here ever will, but with your stance on religion and what you think the game Spore is doing to our children (or whoever) you are attempting to do the same thing from the other side. And it’s only your opinion that the ideas Spore plants in peoples heads are “bad” or “wrong”. In fact, everything that occurs in Spore is as fictional as the Bible. It’s just based on whatever information they could use to create a game that lightly follows the rules of evolution. It’s not a concrete educational tool that someone could use then walk away with a comprehensive knowledge of the Theory of Evolution. It’s a game. And like all other games, it will never fully translate what occurs in the real world.

It’s a game, and Will Wright has clearly stated that he didn’t want to come down on either side of the creationism/evolution debate though he pointed out that the player assumes the role of what is basically an intelligent designer. The game is not meant to be taken as the literal truth of the cosmos, it is intended as a toy to play with.
Even if you can’t stand with a majority of other intellectually honest Christians and abandon 7 day creationism for the much better clockmaker theory, there is still no need to bash Spore because it’s fictional setting doesn’t mesh with your dumb world view. Wright even pointed out in an interview that, before Spore was released, has had expected both side of the debate to go nuts. Instead, he said, he had only gotten complaints from atheists up to that point. Whoops! Looks like you’re on the devil’s side of this argument!

I was about to take my hat off to you and congratulate you on the RickRoll but alas its not true.
Ok lets see………
1. The Bible is a social document: its about how to live your life, not the be all and end all of scientific discovery, there are some bits that cannot be taken literally (snakes eat mice and small animals, not “dirt” as they are banished to in genesis, you can go to the zoo and watch them do this)
2. Translation issues: The old testament started off as a spoken document held by the tribes of Israel, now this on its own causes problems, a simple game of Chinese whispers with your children will show this issue in a nutshell, even the Buddhists (who formulated chanting as a memory technique) weren’t able to truly deal with this. From spoken world it was written down into Hebrew then Aramaic then Latin then old English then retranslated under the order of King James (to make it pleasing to his form of Christianity and political climate) then reconstituted into the good news bible. On top of the human error issues with all these changes the meaning of words change, The ancient Hebrews would not have needed to differentiate between “create” and “develop” meaning that an act of god snapping his fingers would have translated the same as him running evolution.
3. How long is a “day”? Now this is an issue brought up partially by translation (i think the original might translate literally as a time period) but also by the fact that days rely on there being a sun which there was not a the start of genesis
4. lack of empirical evidence: creationism doesn’t hold water as all the “proof” can easily be counteracted by other theories (and i clarify the different between a hypothesis and a theory here, a theory has been proven where as a hypothesis is speculation waiting to be proven ).
5. Example of evolution in nature: the flu virus every year mutates to counteract the vaccines that are developed to counteract it, MRSA is an evolutionary jump for survival as is every drug resistant illness that currently plagues our hospitals, the same thing happens with insects and insectersides, mixamatosis in rabbits and a hundred other examples
6. Radio carbon and geological dating: If genesis is completely true then so is the rest of the old testament, much as it has been calculated from the old testament that the world is only a few thousand years old geological dating has shown this to be completely untrue, oh and while where at it, light from the most distant stars would take longer than this apparent age of the universe to reach us, again more evidence that the bible cannot be used in a scientific context.
7. the tail bone and the appendix: if we sprang whole from the mind of god how come we have things that just dont do anything?
8. Dinosaurs: the T-Rex would have any animal now living on the planet for breakfast, saying that these animals lived at the same time as everything else may make an awesome t-shirt (jesus on a velosoraphtor is just the best image ever) but doesn’t hold up on even a passing analysis
so that’s my critique of your beliefs, I know lots of other people said most of what I said but I just wanted to get it out in a relatively non combative way.
btw, I’m also NOT denying the existence of a god (as I’m not going to disprove a theory that can be relatively neatly fitted around science just because I don’t like it)

Its unfortunate that you’ve gotten so many insult and/or juvenile posts on your blog. I certainly hope you take the time to clean out the more egregious posts, especially those containing foul language.
That said, while I am an evangelical Christian, and I take my beliefs very seriously, I fundamentally disagree with your perspective on this game. I hope you’ll read and consider an alternative take on both Mr Wright’s game as well as the old battle between creationism and evolution.
First, I think you unfairly pit ’science’ against ‘faith,’ as though the two cannot coexist. In fact, many of the earliest men of science were also men of faith. Galileo has been famously cited as having said “I refuse to believe that the same God who gave us reason and intellect intended us to forego their use.” Gregor Mendel, who is widely considered to be the father of genetics, was a monk. While it is true that many view science as an alternative to faith, there are also many (like myself) who believe that science complements faith; I believe God created a world that follows certain rules (i.e., gravity won’t suddenly ’switch off,’ everything is made of molecules which in turn are made of atoms, etc), and science is the study and observation of those rules.
Second, it is a fact–not a theory–that some lifeforms change over time. Virii and Bacteria ‘mutate’ on a regular basis, causing them to be immune to antibodies that would kill their prior forms. Granted, a small change in a virus is a far cry from the claim that a fish can evolve legs over time and walk out of the ocean, but the fact is, your assertion that “God [created] all the creatures [without] creatures ‘evolving’ into other creatures” simply can’t be factual. Whether this causes you a crisis of faith or not is of course your own prerogative.
Third, I think you can believe both that the earth is older than 6000 years and in the Bible. While it is true that the Bible describes creation as taking 6 days (plus one day off), it was not until day 4 that the sun was created. A day is generally defined as a full rotation of the earth as measured by the relative position of the sun. That means that you are making a very specific temporal argument based on a vague passage of scripture about how long something took before measurable time existed! You are, of course, free to believe whatever you will, but I certainly wouldn’t base my faith on something so tenuous.
Finally, the game Spore really makes a better case for intelligent design (the popular Christian response to evolution) than it does for evolution. Consider: according to the theory of evolution, the earth existed for a gazillion years (whatever
), creatures mutated randomly, and these mutations were either positive, resulting in that form of the critter out living his siblings, or negative, resulting in that form of life getting eaten by the nearest predator. But that isn’t what happens in Spore. In Spore, an intelligent being (the player) creates a creature. That creature is not the result of an accidental mutation. Rather, that creature has been created by a being who cares about its well being, and he or she designs that creature to best be able to survive its environment. How is that not creationism?
