I am sure you are going to be getting A LOT of emails from people yelling, cussing, and being rude because they think you are wrong so I am going to try and not be one of them.
I do feel that you are wrong to attack EA and ‘Spore’ because of YOUR beliefs. Not everyone in the world is Christian nor should every need to be. If you do not believe in evolution that’s fine but don’t try to censor the rest of the world. You are basically being a Nazi (for less of a better term).
I, for one, believe in evolution. It makes more sense than the Bibles explanation (ie: no mention of any dinosaurs which are real). God still made the species of ape that man evolved from but why is it so hard to except that fact. It’s not like we are saying God is not real. If anything the story of how Eve was made is more far fetched than evolution. As as side note, man wrote the bible and man has a tendency to bend the truth about a lot of things.
All I am trying to say is that this site is a total attack against every single person that likes the game ‘Spore’, EA and Will Wright and there is NO need for it at all just because you and a few hundred (maybe thousand) people are upset. Please put an end to his senseless attack.

I would like to start off by saying that I am a southern Baptist from Tennessee. As many of you may know; I live in the ‘buckle’ of the ‘Bible Belt’, but I can’t agree with what you guys are doing. Now I fully agree with Creationism ( I believe that our Lord created Adam and Eve). I don’t see this game as attacking Christianity. It is unarguable that does involve evolution, but think about it; the character may evolve, but it has to first be “Created” by the user. The second issue that has been brought up is the appearance of ‘Adult’ creatures. Once again these characters have been created by users, and also EA has been cracking down on these ‘Creations’; banning any of them found to be inappropriate. Like I said, I completely disagree with the theory of evolution, but this ‘Spore’ is an issue that needs to be researched more before attacking it. I would love a response to this email, so we can all discuss this issue.

So … I mean … no where does anyone say anything about where the things in spore came from. It could have come from God. No one knows. The theory of evolution has absolutely no bearing on the idea of the spontaneous generation of life.

I would argue that Spore is anything but an attack on creationism. If anything, it’s supporting intelligent design to a level I haven’t seen before in a video game.
Does Spore have evolution? Yes. But! It is CONTROLLED! You, as the player, decide what features your race develops, you *design* your creatures and shape them to fit your desires and what you think will either make them look good or what will help them survive in their environment.
In this game, YOU are the intelligent designer, not some random force of nature, and thus in this game you essentially play as God for your race.
Now, yes, playing God can be considered more harmful than teaching them evolution by some, but I don’t think they had that in mind when they created this game. If you haven’t played this game already, please, pick it up and play it. It’s all about Intelligent Design.

2 - They player is only an “demon-like intelligent space creature that violently takes over the galaxy” If he chooses to be! You can easily play this game, from start to end, without killing a single being! Infact, Will Wright has tried very hard to make it harder to play this game violently!
3 - If you think this game is undermining the christian culture or something, you need to first wake up and realise that we are not living in 1500 AD. Then you need to ask yourself: “Is Christianity the only way to go? Or are people allowed to have their own believes?” If you answered yes, good job, now close this website before you embarise yourself even more. If you answered no, get your brain checked, because it seems like you might be suffering from some mental illness, do you cure diseases with holy water and garlic also?

Evolution is scientific fact. This game is not meant to “poison” anyone’s mind, but to learn a little science while playing a fun game which engages a child’s imagination. This game is FAR from corrupt.

Why are you taking all this offense to a simple videogame? The gaming industry is not about ‘poisoning the minds of our children’, just about people enjoying themselves in life. Just because you Christians - or any religious types for that matter - use the thought of an almighty deity as an explanation for everything and a cover for your innermost fears of the pointlessness of existence, lack of a true good or evil, lack of consciousness, memory or any form of your being after death and hopes that there is always someone there to help, defend and support you, who will always succeed. Believe what you want, just don’t make it your most precious thing in life, don’t try to bring it into matters that have nothing to do with it and try this thought out: Are you protecting your children from other people’s ideals and philosophies, or are you yourselves brainwashing them into believing what you say, without allowing them to make their own minds up with the given evidence from both sides?

This game is not an attack on “Christian values” as you put it, it is purely and simply a game. There is no big conspiracy that every game has to have “anti-christian propoganda” and be against religion, this is doing more than what the church can do, stimulate peoples’ imaginations.

Videogame producers don’t come into your home and force you to sit down and play the game at gun-point, it’s your choice. They don’t poison the minds of children, ‘oh so you can make a thing with tits and a penis’, that’s not the game designers, that is the minds of your children. Come on I am religious and I try to go to church every weekend, but this seriously is so wrong. Iam talking about you creating such a website to atack a simple game. The perverted creations made in the game were not made by EA or anyone behind spore, they were made by people that think with their dick instead of their heads. Do you ban your kid from playing games with any kind of Magic because it’s magic and magic is bad? Games with aliens because of the impossibility of life on other planets? Any fantasy game (Say, some cutie kid platformers such as Spyro or Glover) because the fantasy is impossible? Sonic the Hedgehog because talking blue hedgehogs are furrys and furrys are the bane of the internet? Mario because he defies gravity for jumping really high? Spore is a fun game, and you are the Creator in the game, and you can get just about as many lessons in Creationism in the game as you can get lessons in Evolution. Because those are about the only two things in the game, the fact that you are the creator and the fact that it builds with evolution, both of which just happen to be great fun gameplay wise. If it were to use “real” evolution, you would stare at a pool of genetic goo for 6 billion years before anything happend, and if it used “real” creationism, poof, there’s your creatures, and now most of them hate you and you have to try and win back their trust. Neither are as fun as the game Maxis has come up with.

Do you not feel that liberty is a God-given right? Freedom of speech and all that? In the case that liberty is God-given, then Spore is protected *by* God, even if it is not, in your opinion, *for* God. God gave us the ability to speak freely, and we should exercise it as is his will.

Not every one makes “inappropriate” images and creatures on spore, and even if they did it is not EA or Will Wright’s fault for the creations of other people. Spore is just a game that makes the user a god-like figure, but God Himself. I believe in God and Jesus, but I also believe in Evolution, which science proves to be true. In Spore, you play an unseen, God-like being guiding the genetic changes of the creatures you create. That would be create as in creationism. Sure that is called evolution when viewed over time from an outside perspective, but the way it’s presented is more akin to Intelligent Design.
Not to mention the immature penis monsters are the creations of people using the game, not EA. The fact that someone can misuse a relatively deep tool set does not constitute an intentional effort to corrupt children on the part of the programmers, unless they stuck a dedicated genitals slider in there.
Any way, I’m not entirely sure this whole site is legitimate, but the fact that most comments are just hostile attacks rather than intelligent discourse…well it is the Internet. I have read your blog with interest and a certain degree of amusement. I think you are missing the point completely, probably as a result of NOT having played the game (you know, like condeming a book without having READ it).
The “anatomical” characteristics of your creature are user-defined, so the game designers are not responsible of what each individual wants its “creature” to look like, its the users who decide (free will, God’s greatest gift, or so I was taught at Catholic school).
On the other hand, the game is not so much about evolution (a scientifically-sound explanation of phylogeny and ontogeny) as it is of “intelligent design” (which I must say has little scientific evidence in its favor). The fact that the player modifies the course of events lets him “play God” (I’m sure this will keep you awake at nights). A game based on evolution would have gamers only as spectators.
Will Wright is a smart guy. He has provided us with an intelligent game upon which the “controversy” of evolution vs. creation can be discussed (something it is sorely in need of if we wish to avoid the inane ramblings of bible-belt neanderthals vs. the pontificating of gaming pseudo-scientists).
My last point would adress your concerns to what your children are exposed to, which I believe is valid and the right of every parent. The solution seldom resides in which-hunting orbook-burning. It is reflected in how confident you are of having educated your children correctly and turning-off the TV, xbox, PC or the internet (and the world) if you deem the content to be innaproppriate. In that way you will educate your children according to your values while respecting the upbringing and values of the rest of us.

Spore is a game.

Firstly, It seems a little hateful to say that a game that exhibits evolution is propaganda. Through your logic, I could say that if someone created a game that exhibited the Christian view that this absolutely unacceptable. That my children should not even have the chance to see these other points of views, to the extent of burning religious books whether the Bible, the Torah or the Quran for THEY are religious propaganda. Which I find utterly ridiculous, but through your logic, you show that they are ‘propaganda’ and will poison the minds of my children.
Secondly, The game is acceptable within today’s society. The game itself is an E for everyone when not using the Internet. There is a lot of people out there who will find the concept of creatures shaped like genitalia hilarious and creates them. This is not the game’s fault, but rather, the people. Spore does have a ‘no Internet content’ switch, making sure that the creatures within the game are not suggestive in any way shape or form, creating a child-friendly experience of the game. Will Wright did not block these because it would be ridiculous. The human body is nothing to be ashamed of and the game is supposed to be a blank canvas for the imagination, whether sexual or non-sexual.
Thirdly, It seems to me that you have not played Spore and it seems to me that you have not grasped the point of the game itself. The object of the game is NOT “to evolve from a “spore” into demon-like intelligent space creatures that violently take over the galaxy.” But rather, to create and evolve a creature. Whether this creature is violent and takes over the galaxy with force, or a peace loving, democratic creature that seeks to ally with all other life forms, is the choice of the player. Again, ‘Battlefish’ is one specific creature, there are many which are more docile, herbivorous and culture orientated, this is obvious if you look at nature - Lions, Wolves and many other creatures seem to be inherently violent, carnivorous and dangerous. While a Giraffe or a domestic dog are the opposite. The game merely presents the ability to create societies of sentient creatures, whether violent or docile.
You are focusing and more importantly, making an exaggeration of the ‘negative’ or rather, ‘non-Christian’ aspects of the game. I implore you to understand that this is just a game.
I will spare you of disagreements with your religion itself, and hopefully have focused to the site and the concept and content of it. I do not find any religion inherently ‘distasteful’, but rather the application that some people have taken to - if you wish (I myself find debates rather interesting if done well) I will debate with you.
But I will not finish without saying this. There are no such thing “Evolutionairyists”. Please do not use that word, because it doesn’t exist. I understand what the word is supposed to mean (someone who follows the principles of Evolution), but -ist(s) should only replace nouns (not adjectives) ending with -ism; e.g. theism and Theist. EA cannot be held responsible for any “mature” content in Spore. Anything that could cause offense in terms of aesthetics is made by members of the public, and EA are setting up strict filters to stop most mature content from being released. They are trying hard to make the game playable for everyone, surely the same thing you are trying to do. Thus, any argument you have about Spore and EA corrupting any youth by showing adult content is void.
You yourself mentioned that Will Wright had made creationist games including Sim City and The Sims. Now when these games were released, were those who feel Evolution is correct up in arms? Were they making blogs and moaning about their ideals being undermined? No, most went out, played the game and took it at a superficial level. But one game comes out where creatures evolve and you go off on one? That’s just childish and shows your own insecurities. There are a lot of people out there who hate us because somehow our focus has turned to who can show the most hatred for what we consider wrong or evil, rather than showing the love and compassion that this world REALLY needs.

I can see how Spore offends your views on intelligent design but I must say that that is only because YOU were the one in control of the game at the time.
Now that were done with the formalities Will Wright has only given us the tools to do with as we please just as you believe God has given us our life to do with as we please. Sure some have chosen to make penis monsters (Something that I need to find and download to my game because what could be funnier that conquering the penis monster empire?) but most of us have created creatures that we love after our own ideas or after what we thought was necessary for our creature to do the best in the Sporeverse. And just like how some abuse their power in Spore many abuse it in life. People steal, kill and abuse each other everyday so I say that if you blame Will Wright for all the wrong that is being done in the game then I will blame GOD for everything that is wrong in this world.
In fact God is even more in the wrong that Will since if God is omnipotent then he should have known better and even if he isn’t he still has way more experience and intelligence than Wright.
I think we are all missing the point here. It’s just a computer game. If you believe that evolution is wrong and you teach your kids the same, what is wrong with letting them play a game if they want to? Surely you’re not worried that they’ll discover creationism is wrong? Through virtual reality? Kids are smarter than that. What is wrong with letting them make up their own minds anyway? The game itself actually presents a rather distorted view of evolution, and any high school kid should be able to tell you where the differences are.
My final point: deny your kids something that they want and they will usually find some way of getting it without your knowledge. They’ll be around their friends houses playing it anyway, and will probably pay more attention to the messages included within, as their interest will have been piqued by your strident refusal to let them play the game.
Considering the amount of responders that think this site was a really stupid idea, you lose on being right in your stance. You’re just ignorant, and as much as you may hope that the world eventually becomes a peaceful christian (but only your kind of christianity, I’m sure, considering how you spat at the episcopalian church) world, it’s not going to happen (nor is there a way that a large population of christians and world peace could exist at the same time). let us start here, spore does base itself around the theory of evolution but when did it ever try to enforce that on people who play the game? if im correct your the one trying to enforce your believes of intelligent design on anyone reading. about the so called”nudity” in spore, yes maxis did include a very good customization system for your creature and a variety of “parts” to fit your creature with. Seriously, I’ve played through Spore. It’s less Evolution and more “Intelligent Design” (Hahaha). The game doesn’t last very long, and it really isn’t that great of a game that’s been in development as long as it’s been. It’s simple, and rather easy to beat.

anyone with a free mind and studies genetics can decipher that evolution is a crappy theory. And since the player is the one controlling the game, than its more of a Design type game than evolution.
EA wanted a game with no limits, spore is close to that. It is how the player that plays it that makes it what it is.

Y’know, as a philosophy student, I fully accept that evolution is, in many ways, a flawed theory. And I personally, am an agnostic. Yet I fail to see, how when games like Grand Theft Auto, and Manhunt are out, people find time to complain about games like Spore. Fine, you can make weird pervy creations have sex. Oh well. Virtual sex sites have been on the web for yonks. It’s nothing new. I could understand if you opposed it for it’s low age restriction. But opposing it on the grounds that it teaches kids evolution or something seems a bit daft to me. I mean, if I go and play Age of Mythology, does that mean I’m teaching myself that Greek Gods hurl thunderbolts at people? Or even if you argue that this teaches children that evolution is correct, and this is contrary to your beliefs, I still fail to see the problem. By that reasoning, if I simply published a book titled, ‘A childs guide to evolution’, you would feel compelled to create a website vehemently disagreeing with me. I guess you could do just that, but people might find it just a bit silly. But hey, every time I’ve ever tried to argue anything with a religous person about their views which don’t hold water, they rely on faith, as if that backs up and justifies all they say and do.

You know, evolution could have happened the way it is described, as the Bible provides no conclusive evidence except the word of God as it was translated by the ears of Moses in (there are in fact two stories of creation in Genesis). Secondly, Genesis is the story of the beginning of God’s people and the line of David in order to predict the coming of the Messiah and God’s way of showing us how to find him and not technically a road map pertaining to how all creation was made. Jesus even implied time is different in the eyes of God when referring to the end times which could imply that 7 days in the eyes of God could be vastly longer in the eyes of man. Technically we have found fossils of Dinosaurs and creatures that existed billions of years ago and yet according to the Bible the world is only 2000+ years old. I personally think that God placed the ability for us to learn and evolve within our own environments in order for us to survive as a species. It makes no sense as a programmer and a designer to micromanage every little string of data. However, that being said, there’s not enough facts or evidence to say for sure that we ourselves evolved from a previous species (they have yet to provide a missing link for humanity in the science world). Also, the fossil record jumps from simple organisms to extremely complex organisms. This may be a mystery that humanity is probably never meant to solve. Evolution is a Theory not a fact and unfortunately most schools teach it that way now a days. Regardless of all this, it is a video game and not to be taken seriously.

While the game certainly encourages thought about evolution, it should be rather obvious that the central tenet of gameplay is NOT evolution by natural selection (as it is in the real world) but evolution via ARTIFICIAL selection / design. The person playing the game is essentially put in charge of an “intelligent design” toolbox.

1. The game exemplifies the process you wish everyone believed in - intelligent design.

Spore is a player created game, and such things are made by the players. What are you talking about “demon” creatures and just so you know EA isn’t allowing inappropriate creatures like that into the game! Just so you know the videos you make do not go through a filtering process nor’ do screenshots! So anyone could make a video or screenshot and upload it to youtube or the internet but extremely inappropriate creatures will NOT be allowed to go in others games and you CAN turn off the online sharing so only creations yourself and maxis have made show up in-game. Spore focuses more on creativity than evolution instead of instantly rejecting it I suggest you download the free creature creator from spore.com and try it out. It is with sincere sadness that I read this blog. Not only has this person assumed that other people are not allowed an opinion but they have also completely misunderstood Spore. If he took the time to do so he would see that far from showing Evolution (a process by which environmental factors influence the development of organisms), it actually shows a kind of ‘hands-on’ development whereby the player creates the creatures and then influences their development. It is the latest ‘God sim’, a term which is particularly relevant here.
So in one hand there’s a ‘game’. Everyone, if you want to play it, please go and enjoy.

If they put their brains back in, they could actually make thrilling contributions to modern thinking such as “Isn’t it amazing that scientific study is confirming the Biblical order of Creation. If a religious person writes something in the vein of “god does this..” or “god is responsible for this..” you never see an atheist respond with the feeling of their whole existence beeing attacked, simply because they have confidence in what they believe about our existence and how it’s come to be. The only reason for your negative responce to Spore, as I can see it, is that Spore represents a view on existence that’s built on a more stable ground than religion - evolution and science. Science can explain a lot of what goes on in the world, and the things we don’t know yet will in time be discovered. Religion explains nothing, it point’s it’s finger towards “god” as soon as there is something that cannot be easily explained or grasped. Religion makes sence in regions where education and living conditions are bad, not in a modern and educated society.

Learn about evolution before you criticize it. You might make a better point every now and then.

I very much doubt the administrator of this site is concerned about the moral problem that Spore apparently raises. If they were to remove the adverts and not profit from the existance of this site I would perhaps consider his claim to be offended as being more genuine. But given the poorly thought out arguements and the current media climate over Spore I think this is little more than a clever scheme to make money from hits, saddly I was fool enough to visit.

Well, in my opinion, Spore is a great game and all this stuff about creationism is the last thing I think about when playing the game.
I must say I’m dissapointed with you. And what many people are saying is true, it is people like you that give Christians a bad name. What happened to tolerance? Acceptance? Spore is not attacking you, it is not being forced upon you, so why attack it with such blind ferocity?
The truth is, both God and evolution can both only be called theories. Neither can be prooved completley without a doubt. We simply choose to belive something different than you, and we would appreciate it if you do not degrade us for our decision to do so. The fact is, at this point, there is more evidence pointing towards evolution than intelligent design. Frankly, and no offence to you, but I’m not inclined to belive everything a book written a thousand years ago. Of course, that’s not to say that there is no God, but why don’t we wait and see before we argue over who is right and who is wrong?

Spore is a GAME, and is created to entertainment. Is not perfect (nothing it is), but is very flexible and permits develop the creativity. Is like a blocks puzzle. You can make a lot of things with this too. Is not a game with violence, sex or terrorism like others. Is a game for create and *construct* not destruct. I believe that you are blowing this whole issue way out of proportion. I am also a Christian and believe in creationism, but some of the accusations you have made about Will Wright and EA are just unnecessary and quite frankly rude. I fail to see why you feel that this game is any kind of “attack” against anything. There is no reason to blame Will Wright and EA for pornographic creatures because this is user created content and not made by developers. The game clearly doesn’t deny creation it is just an outlet for creativity. Spore is no worse than some of the games that have come before it. Jack Thompson has been fighting games he considers immoral and wrong, and the whole while making false accusations and assumptions, much like you have here, and his career has gone nowhere but down. God gave us freedom of choice and no matter how bad our choices are God still cares and forgives us; I just ask that you give people the same respect and courtesy, and please stop mucking up Will Wright’s good name you really are just hurting your own cause here. I live in England and worry about the blogs that you put up on this website. I appreciate that people have views and they have justifications for their views but I do not feel that forcing a tirade on a video game is the right way to go about putting these views across to the public.
You cite the fact that you can create animals which have grotesque features and large genitals. I would counter-claim that and say that the children, young adults, or adults playing this game will create the species to look the way they want to. So based on that if your child was to buy this game and they decided they wanted to create the above mentioned species then it would only be due to their curiousness or immaturity. Neither of which EA can be blamed for, and instead I would say that maybe you would want to sit them down and talk to them about what they designed the creature in this way.
I have played the game for a few hours over the last six days or so and am really impressed with the detail and content of the game. I think that the game is nothing more than release from stresses and strains of everyday life. Spore is the natural progression from games such as Sim City, which the Admin of this website so clearly likes themselves.
Personally as long as the person playing this game realises that it is purely a game, then what is the harm of it ?

I dont really understand what your problem with this game is. Its certainly not specifically marketed at children (unlike McDonalds adverts). And in addition what is the harm in allowing your child to be exposed (if that is the correct word) to Darwin’s theory? Is your faith so shaky that you do not believe it will survive the experience? What are trying to acheive on this “quest” (I’m using the term incredibly loosely there)? Do you want the game banned? Do you want the rating increased? Because quite simply if that is the case I’m afraid you’re not going to succeed. For the game to be banned or the rating increased you’re going to need to show this game poses some kind of danger to the public. Which is doesn’t. I am just popping by because I disagree quite strongly with your attitude against evolution. I grew up Christian (my father was a minister in the Lutheran Church) and I have been interested and studied the sciences all my life.
First of all I would like to state: evolution is not a belief. Science doesn’t deal with beliefs. Science is merely the use of our imperfect intellects to understand the Universe around us as best as possible through observed behavior. From these observations, scientists through history have come to conclusions that seem to work. The terms ‘Survival of the Fittest’ and ‘Little Mistakes’ are common misconceptions about the theory of evolution. Survival of the Fittest was an imperfect idea that was long ago discarded by evolutionary scientists… a more correct term may be ‘Survival of the Fit Enough’ but even this is incorrect. I don’t want to argue the details of Evolutionary Science ad-nauseum as there are plenty of books on the subject to explain the current state of conclusions drawn by repeated observation. The ‘Little Mistakes’ you speak of are just a matter of perspective. If you work on the assumption that all God’s creatures are perfect, than obviously the ones who have died off over time were equally perfect and hence not mistakes.
I do not know which are the core ideas of Evolutionary Science that you cannot resolve with your Faith so I can’t address specifics but I and many Christians have come to the belief that Evolution is the method God uses as an ongoing process to shape our world to His will.

I personally saw it as a game. As you said, I always enjoyed sim city games and I see it just like those. A game.
I personally think that you are directing this wrong. I mean, just by looking at all the hate messages you are receiving, makes me sad. I don’t know where to go from here but to plead for you to stop what you’re doing. No, I’m not asking you to stop blogging. No, I’m not asking you to ignore your convictions, but just direct them differently. Realize that the world is our mission field and that how we act inside greatly influences those that don’t believe what we believe. Acting so judgemental only reinforces what some believe all Christians are which isn’t a good reflection on who our God is.
Aiming these blogs at EA won’t change a thing. Sad to say but that 1% stock drop has more to do with the drm on the game then this site. You want less hate mail? You want to actually show people Christ’s love in your life? Through your life?
I’ll suggest some changes:
Aim it at potential parents thinking about buying this game for kids and keep it there.
Make it more informational and less personal.
Change the name of the site from “antispore.com” to “whatyouneedtoknowaboutspore.com” or something.
Don’t assume that everyone is a Christian or that despite what everyone believes that only the Christian world view is the correct one. Whether you believe it or not, people will take offense to that!
Please understand that this is all coming from my heart. As I hurt to see you get pounded by the weight of hatemail and how it distracts from your message. But also the damage I see it making on the impressions of lots of non-Christians around the world. It is much easier for them now to call us all names and write us off then to see a Christian woman stand up and encourage parents to do a little more research before they buy any video game today. I’ve watched parents at stores seriously buy their 9 year olds M rated games without even looking at it, just because their kid simply hands it to them and says that they want it!
I hope that these words don’t fall on deaf ears.

Although I appreciate your opinion and the fact that you are standing up for what you believe in, it would seem as though you have been given false information regarding both Spore and evolution. From the posts you have made over the last few days on your blog, it is very clear that you have a very poor understanding of evolution. In addition, it would seem that you have a very poor understanding of Spore, what the game is, and how it is played (Although this most recent post shows that you have done a bit more research into the game, which in turn has made you rethink some of the comments you made previously).
I (and I imagine many other people) can not take you seriously when a cursory reading of your posts shows that you have done no research into either of the subjects you are dedicating so much negativity towards. On this note, I sincerely request that you set aside your biases and previous stance on both Spore and evolution, take the time to do some real research on both, look at them objectively, and then re-evaluate your previous position on both the game and the theory of evolution.

While I wholeheartedly disagree with your opinions on the subject of evolution, you have a right to them and a right to express them. And I applaud your active participation in choosing what your children spend their time with.
If you want people to take you seriously in your campaign against evolution, you at least need to have your facts straight. The most common mistake that most anti-evolutionists make in my experience is in having complete and total ignorance in what evolution actually is. You may think that you know what evolution is because your pastor told you, or Ken Hamm told you. But would you say that I had a complete understanding of the Christian faith if my teacher on the subject were Richard Dawkins? I didn’t think so. Most anti-evolutionist arguments fail because the people making those arguments know next to nothing about evolution.
Based on what I know about this game, it represents the beliefs of IDers more than it does evolutionists.
If you want your children to grow up ignorant to the consensus understanding of science, be my guest. Just don’t force my children into that same ignorance.

In case you haven’t figured it out or are lacking a third grade education, that life evolves is the FACT of evolution (no one disputes this). The THEORY of evolution describes the mechanism by which life evolves (i.e. selection/mutation/etc). A “scientific theory” is not just some wacky idea that someone dreamed up. If you don’t understand the difference, then I suggest some time reading something other than religious BS - maybe a book on evolution or something like that would be helpful. “Evolution - What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters” by Donald Prothero would be a good place to start.

Although I am not completely comfortable with evolution, I am not very comfortable with creationism either. Evolution is not a scientific fact so far (there are holes in that theory) but it is well founded in my point of view.
So or so, I believe that there are better things to invest your energy into. This pages wont help enyone, not with you arguments, which are kind of stupid (like that one against intelligen design in the game - do you really think that you would be able to survive in this world if God didn’t create you with mouth? He set the rules and created us according to those rules, be they spiritual or physical. Will Wright also set an universe with certain rules and the user created creatures have to abide them, but basically it’s still the same thing. Does this game support evolution theory? Yes, it does. Does it support intelligent design theory? Yes, it does - in a very similar way.
The arguments you’ve chosen for this web-site are not based even on truth (using users-created content to show that the game allows to create not-very-nice-things is basically stupid - you can use the very same argument against Paintbrush incorporated into your OS), which should be the foundations of our lives according the Bible… You should begin with your own miss-statements and then, may be, correct other people’s thoughts

The game may contain the idea of Common Ancestry, but it certainly isn’t Darwinian Natural Selection by any stretch of the imagination. I can see where you would not agree with the game due to its focus on evolution, especially if you are a creationist (I am one myself), but the majority of the posts seem to focus on the sexually explicit creatures in the game - however, these are the result of someone else’s work, not EA or Will Wright. The creature creation is no different than a pen and a piece of paper. It’s not like there is a “Boobs” or “Penis” tool you can use. You can’t hold these creations against EA or then you would have to hold any offensive drawings against paper manufacturers.
Everybody is entitled to their beliefs and ways of conducting their lives just as you are, but I really don’t see how you justify wanting to remove something from our social landscape all together because it affronts your personal beliefs!
To me, that flags an insecurity you have in your own faith and beliefs, and forcing the rest of the world to remove the conflicting elements and ‘temptations’ to make your own life easier is just plain selfish.
As for the gaming industry invading the lives and homes of people, my parents kept gaming out of our house when I was a child, and as a result I know of it only what I have chosen to seek out in my adult. When my parents chose not to purchase gaming consoles and games for me as a child, they successfully kept the gaming ‘influence’ out of my young life.
Again, I feel it is a choice that needs to be made by each individual, and each parent for their children, as to whether or not it is something you wish to partake in. It is not up to the rest of the world to make that decision for you.
It’s a game, A GAME. It’s like minsweeper. I don’t understand why people are worried about video games. And if you don’t like it, ignore it. Don’t let your kids play it. Otherwise, you can enjoy the game yourself.

I think your views are very missleading….and wrong. Why? Well. First of you shouldn’t force your views on people, if people want to believe in god, they will..if they don’t they won’t and thats their choice, not yours. Second, your posts are quite misleading. I quote your first post:

You said this…yes..that is an OPTION…but how you design your creature and how they act depends on the person. Chances are your son would make a cute little cuddly thing. But going back to my point. You can create whatever way you want..not just a demonic create. I created a race called the Tamriphor. They are a green skinned race..body shape is a cresent moon shape..the back going into a tail behind them with legs and arms completely with hands and feet. Nice wide eyes for vision and a juttery beak for herbivores! Not carnivores. I then proceded to build them into a civilisation through peaceful conduct, offerings, impressing other tribes, civilisations etc until we hit the space race.
Suddenly I though it was time to conqure the galaxy. Yes there was sarcasm in that. What I actually done was starting to move from planet to planet making offerings to creatures, establishing trade routes etc. The only time I ever used my weapons was when I was raided by pirates and when a warrior nation declared war on me for not paying them 200,000 credits to stop them attacking me..basically extortion…and I wasn’t having that, so they decided to declare war on me. I believe in an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth as the old testamont states and thus continued to decrease and decrease their system strengh until the said “cease fire cease fire we surrender!” in which case I stopped while democracy came back. However even during the war I still proceded to Terraform planets and establish alliances with other races peacefully.
It’s not the war orientated game you believe it is…and even though I do have a belief in god, I still like the game…it is JUST a game…at the end of the day you can say that and most kids understand it, its fantasy and playing off Darwins idea. it’s not promoting that Darwin is right…although i do have my own problems with religion. In the way you say it, I could just as easily say the bible is one big propoganda to increase the idea of creationism.
Regarding to the mature images on your page they were created by someone who has a very sick mind. You can’t help that….but…there is a feautre in Spore which prevents it from automatically downloading creations people made, yes…it is boring…but even if you want that…EA do monitor all reports sent to them. I saw a very disturbing one on the Sporepedia and I reported it. I kid you not, within 10 minutes it was gone..never to be seen again. Your child is safe from them. Plus the image of the 2 creatures procreating is actually 1 creature made in creature creator to look like 2 creatures procreating. In the actual game when you want to improve or change your species..you do a mating call ability. The opposite sex walks up to you or you to him (you lay the eggs so techically you play as the female, but this is uncertain, I don’t think there really is a gender) and then hearts appear over their heads and they do a little dance (quite cute and comical) and then you go and lay an egg and you then go into the creature creator and modify the species.
On National Geographic: It was a cross promotional thing. A “What if” I mean…we are not perfect, I won’t pretend we are. We sin, we do things that sin, we can’t agree on moral standards that’s one problem (besides things like thou shalt not kill) but there is still no evidence that god even exists. It’s possible…but it is not a guarrentee. Of course you can at Paley’s watch analogy to find evidence for this but even still the people and world we live in is not perfect. Suffering….a god wouldn’t let that happen, and that is MY belief.

Jack Thompson hardly wins….I have played the GTA games..and I do agree that there is sensless violence…but the same can be said for movies. I turned out ok, A grade student, keeping out of trouble. I’m not sure if anyone will actually read this, but I felt that I had to say something. I live in England, which I suppose you could say was a Christian country at the moment. Although I am not a religious man myself, I do tolerate the views of others, and I always welcome open debate on the subject. I’ve been following the Evolution/Creationism debate for a long time now in the U.S, and frankly I am fairly certain that I speak for much of Europe when I say that I find it quite puzzling. The purpose of education is to ensure that our children have the best possible start in life. We strive to give them all the tools, skills and knowledge they will need to be successful in life. In this sense, the idea of teaching dogmatic religious beliefs as having some kind of scientific value seems archaic and counter-productive. Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not saying that religion shouldn’t be taught in school at all - In fact I think that learning about the many religions of the world is one of the best ways to gain insight into world cultures and customs - I’m simply saying that it should be presented as what it is: Religion, not science. For these reasons, America is increasingly being seen by alot of the world as a progressively backwards state. Serious debate about teaching creationism as science simply wouldnt happen in much of Europe - you would be laughed out of parliament (and rightly so if I’m brutally honest).
Religion has taught us much over the last few thousand years. It has laid out moral codes of conduct, and it has been used to justify horrible wars and genocide. Would these things have happened without religion? Yes, they probably would. That’s just human nature. It’s how we are, and it can’t be avoided. In my opinion religion has served its purpose now. We live in an enlightened time, we know more about the universe around us than we could ever have dreamed of only decades ago. Religion paints a picture of the universe which is far too small and uninteresting to me. The universe that we see around us is far more amazing and awe-inspiring than the confines of dogma.
I hope that one day we will live in a world that does not need religion. Where people are comfortable with where they fit in the grand picture of things, and where we are all prepared to be held accountable for our actions. I know where I will go where I die - nowhere - but does that scare me? Absolutely not. It only gives me the motivation to make the most of the life I have, to learn as much as I can, to better myself, and to help a few people to see the light along the way.
Please, please email me about this if you wish. I would love to speak to someone openly and honestly who is as passionate as I am about this subject, whichever sides of the debate we may be. I don’t expect to “convert” you, as I hope you wouldn’t expect to do to me, but if we can gain a little insight from each other then it will be more than worth the effort.

Anyone has has the time to put up such a web site about a game and clam that it is a war on their belief system needs to take a look at what they are saying. Its just a game your ideas are not shared by everyone and its not right to say that any idea other than yours is wrong. The game makes no clam that your Christian value are wrong or otherwise. If the game however did say that your Christin ideas are wrong I would have a problem with the game however just because it shows other ideas in no way is an attack or clam that your ideas are wrong. An example of this is books or tv you could make the same calm you are making here that any tv show or book that says or shows anything that is not real within it is attacking what you know to be truth and suggesting that you are wrong.

I myself believe in god but it’s just a game and it’s quite enjoyable. There are many other games that could contradict the theory of creationism but they’re just games. Just like there are movies that contradict them and books.
You seem to like flagging innappropriate and demon-like content. These are created by people not the game or anyone who works for the game. The spore community websites removes any that are in-appropriate. It’s like saying MS Paint is bad because you can draw offensive stuff in it.
The same goes for the violent demons you mentioned, when I play the game I like to choose a more civilised trait by making friends with other galaxies not blowing them up.

If you feel strongly about something you should stand up for your beliefs, come what may. So far you have kept a civil tongue in your postings, unlike some of your attackers. Its all fine and good to disagree with someone, but to belittle them is a different matter.
As for Spore, I see it as a game. No more and no less. It no more promotes evolution or creationism than Neverwinter Nights 2 or Red Alert 3. Sure you can make some interesting critters *ahem* but that is the player’s choice and not the default function of the game, which is no different, in my opinion, than the nude mods in games like Oblivion or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Thank you for some interesting thoughts about gaming and religion. I do believe that the physical world did not create itself, and that spiritual beeings directed by God was the cause or the intent. That said - I don’t know if it is true, therefor I do research through scientific methods and I try to think and understand what others believe in. That I do because most natural science people don’t have a scientific foundation for their materialism. The other day I asked two of my biology lecture holders, and neither one could give me a refernce to a book or an article to support their materialistic beliefs!
I think that games like Spore and even more a game like Sim Life, are tools to make people think about life and its origins, and see what consequences such theories might lead to. If they actually do think or try to find proof for what they believe is of course not a given necessity.
Why people are so offended by your initiative for debate - is beyond my understanding, and quite surprising, but I think it has to do with the anonymity of the net and the distance people keep to each other: If you know somebody, it is a lot harder to insult that person and the chance is big that you will be sorry, since you will meet that person again soon. Still I wouldn’t mind if you or somebody else sorted out the constructive feedbacks in a separeted log, since I stopped reading after about seven abuses.

Ok first off, religion in my terms are completly based on beliefs and not necessarily on fact…. there is nothing wrong with that… its good to have something to believe in..
And who is to say that the theory of evolution isnt true either… there is no real way to prove that it is true however there is evidence that would suggest it could be possible…
there was a 10 min preview posted on msnbc of that national geographic show.. it showed a housefly that grew legs on its face, it died but still the idea that such a fatal flaw could happen to a fly.. whos to say that a simular deviation in another fly may create a better fly..

Now, while I do believe you are entitled to your beliefs and that you are fully entitled to an opinion on a subject, in this case I do think that you may have over-reacted. As is mentioned several times, neither EA or Maxis are responsible for any of the rude creations. Having played the game myself, I haven’t felt enlightened in the ways of Evolutionism, nor do I feel that the game tries to project this belief upon it’s players, it is merely a game, simply created to be enjoyed, not to convey any specific messages or beliefs. Of course, as I said, you are fully entitled to your opinion and I do not believe you should be recieving some of the rather insulting comments you have done.
I would also like to add that, ironically enough, Google AdSense has given you adverts for Spore on your page, just thought I’d mention it.

That phrase, believe it or not, has the same argumental foundation of the hole thesis that you’re defending, none. That phrase, as an argument, is idiotic and offensive. Just as your blog.
The fact that you are a christian so devoted as you seem (I say ’seem’ because I’ve never meet you) and that you possess such a blind and great faith is something that should be admired.
However, should i start a blog to attack creationism you would be angry, and with all reason, that is the same anger that many of these people feel when you start a blog to attack evolution.
Saying that Will Wright is evil, that he is knows no boundaries, condemning people because they consider evolution as a right, acceptable answer, condemning them because YOU consider that God has the ultimate power and all the answers, condemning them because YOU consider that what they believe makes God seem non-perfect (quote:”God did not create us through trial and error…Each of his concepts were perfect on the first try.”), all of these affirmation are base in the mere fact that what you believe to be wrong is wrong, which may make complete sense to you, but not to everybody else, and that happens because of one simple fact, not everyone thinks alike.
Is of no importance whether you consider evolution to be evil or good, nor whether i consider creationism to be right or wrong. The fact is that to try to impose your beliefs and way of thinking is wrong, no matter what your or me or anybody else may or may not think about it. No wonder why you receive so many more than rude comments, you are offending many people here.
As why is wrong to try to impose ways of thinking to other people. I have to opinions:
1- We have seen many times in the past how much unhappiness have brought people who have tried to impose over others, such as Hitler, The Inquisition, Cortez, Europe from century XVII to XX, Japan during WWII, the lobotomies of the “highly civilized” societies and many more… NOW, I AM NOT IMPLYING THAT YOU ARE LIKE HITLER, i just think that trying to impose yourself over other is something that does not bring any good, even if you consider just or correct what you try to impose. Because there are many degrees of truth, of right, of wrong. And these depend of the person you’re dealing with, which brings me to my second point.
2- It does not matter whether you consider yourself to be right or wrong. If you try to impose your way of thinking to others by force to things will happen: number one, you WILL fail, because nobody can impose a way to think, is like trying to force someone to like you, or try to threaten someone in order for them to fall in love. It simply cannot be done, because your mind can only be formed by you and no one else, trying to force it is stupid. The second thing that WILL happen is that they WONT like you, because your imposition is, in a MUCH MINOR degree, like an attempt of assault or kidnapping, is a violation to someones integrity. Because of it, imposing only leads to anger, is the opposite of a dialog.
It is true that there are many stupid people out there, which are the ones who respond badly, but I’ve seen many comments that say the same things that I’m saying here, intelligent open minded comments from people that are responding in a respectfull way.
You may consider the mere fact of a game that base it self on the theory of evolution an offense, that there is a limit when something normal or non important for a group becomes a real lack of respect, an offense to other group. Buy this is not one of those cases. There are many people who believe in the theory of evolution, and this game is not being imposed to anyone, if YOU don’t want to buy it then don’t, if you don’t want your kids to play it don’t buy it to them, the point is that YOU can choose not to believe in evolution, while I can choose to believe and to buy Spore. No one is imposing you anything, and you should not impose yourself to anyone.
Many more people will keep insulting you until you understand that you must be more tolerant and respect full. Closing your eyes and saying “The bible says they wrong, so i must not listen” will get you no where. This is not about whether God exist or not. Is about tolerance to others opinions, is about understanding that not every one thinks nor should think like you. Is about realizing that no one is attacking God or the Church, but is simply another way of thinking that have found a creative and very fresh way of expressing. I’m not saying that Spore is a game to promote evolution, is just a game that uses evolution as a base to create a way of entrainment, nothing more. The only attack has come from you to many other people, is only natural that they respond, however, to wish for someone to die, or just insulting him is no wrong, in my opinion. Many of the people who have responded seem just as intolerant and close minded as you seem. However I hope that you open your eyes and realize that you cannot, and you will never be able to impose your way of thinking to anyone.
