I am really at a loss for words here.
It seems Will has suddenly switched gears from evolution to creation and is trying to say that in 18 days, Spore users did what God did in 7. So all of spore users add up to 38% of God. Unbelievable.
Just another direct attack from a man who thinks he is unstoppable.

First off, I am going to say that I am not particularly religious. I’m not Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, I’m not anything. I have been to a church a few times, but I’m still not a believer. My view of religion tends to be “live and let live”. You practice your faith, and I’ll do my thing, and we’ll both be happy. Now, with that said…
Riddle me this: why do evolution and religion have to be separate? I mean, why couldn’t it be that yes, evolution happened over how many million years… directed by some higher power? It even goes hand in hand with it, if you ask me. People point at evolution and say “the chances of that happening and us evolving out of it is like winning the lottery every week for a billion years”, yet it never occurs to them to see the hand of a higher power in that. Spore, if anything, reinforces this: the evolution is ENTIRELY directed by the player, not by random chance. So yes, its an evolution game on the surface, but if you look deeper and actually stop to think about it… it is and it isn’t at the same time.
Now, my next problem: so you don’t like the game. You don’t like the player-generated immature content (that you can turn off, IIRC - I’m too strapped for cash to go get the game just yet myself). You don’t like the theory of evolution. You don’t want your kids playing it. That’s fine, that’s what parenting is about: you do your best to shield your kids from things you don’t think they should be interacting with while trying to not coddle them too much. Still, why does this give you the right to say how other people’s children should be raised? They come from different parents, in a different environment, and most of them don’t even like in the same town, or even state as you. You, as a parent, are supposed to protect your kids from what you don’t think they should see. It sounds like you are doing a good job of it! Most people who flip out about this kind of thing are saying “I found little Billy doing this and this! What is to stop him from doing it again?! I demand it goes away!” Well, maybe you should be keeping a closer eye on little Billy in that case. You, however, have earned some respect in that you at least actually bother to be a parent for your child. But now, with this blog, you are trying to parent every child in the nation, and censor free speech. That’s wrong. People have the right to be as stupid or as wrong as they like, ma’am.
Like I said, I’m not religious. That line you used, “and none of them has enough Jesus to stand up and say what they are doing is wrong” (possibly paraphrased, but I think you know what I am talking about [and there ARE other religions, by the way]) bothered me. Because, you know what? I don’t have an ounce of Jesus in me. But even if it turns out Christianity is the One True Religion or whatever, I don’t think I’m deserving of going to hell with the serial murders, rapists, and so on and so forth just because I didn’t have faith. I try to be a good person, to not lie, cheat, steal, or hurt other people. I try to be a good friend to the people I know. I’m even an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. So I’ve got all those parts right… yet playing or making a video game that I think would be nifty puts me in the wrong (no, I’m not one of the Spore developers).
Is it just me… or does something about that not quite stack up right?

Well, personally, as an evolutionist, I find that attacking a game because of these perverted pictures is quite…stupid.

It also seems that in SimCity, you don’t have to create an ideal society, you can always send a few riots in and wipe the place out. The player does what he wants.

Okay, as one comment of what will undoubtedly be hundreds (especially since G4TV has just posted a link to this website on their news feed), I know this won’t be read, but I do hope someone decides to take a look at it and consider what it says here.
How can you claim that people do not add up to God when our goal as Christians is to operate as part of the body of Christ? As far as we know, humans are the only ones in the universe who worship God - and what would God be without someone to worship him? Not God. He’d be one lonely, extremely powerful entity - all dressed up with nowhere to go, so to speak. So while some humility is absolutely necessary - because we are NOT worthy of His devotion - we must also acknowledge our level of importance.
You talk about “perfection,” and we are not perfect, so please don’t even go there. Human beings are NOT perfect, and to say we are is to be the worst kind of narcissist. We may be exactly as God wants us, or we may still have a little ways to go, but perfection is something we will NEVER EVER ACHIEVE EVER. NEVER.
What is perfect, though, is mathematics, the building blocks of science, language, and everything else we have on this planet. So if God is perfect…and mathematics are perfect…then why can’t mathematics be the tool, the very VOICE of God? Why couldn’t God have set this whole thing in motion - the Big Bang, the creation of amoeba, the fish stepping out of the water, the monkeys coming down from the trees, the dinosaurs, the cavemen - if you put aside the traditional Christian viewpoint, evolution makes SENSE, it REALLY does. And so if it makes sense, and if we have all this evidence showing that it happened, then why couldn’t it have happened? Because the Bible says that God created us in seven days?
First of all: what does “create” mean when taken in God’s context? Couldn’t “create” mean “set the evolutionary process in motion”? I mean, it says that Adam was built from mud - couldn’t that be an ancient’s childlike understanding of human beings evolving from tiny living particles? Also, what is a “day” to God? There is another place in the Bible, can’t remember where, and it says something about seventy-seven weeks or something - but what it actually means is seventy-seven years. So obviously there’s some freedom taken with time periods in the Bible.
Will Wright does not think he’s God. Nobody really does, because we weren’t built to think that way. Will Wright is taking advantage of an enterprise that he created with his own two hands, and one which has not only earned a lot of money but has inspired a lot of creativity among his fans. What Will Wright is doing when he posts images like the one above is pandering to the widest demographic he can - jaded, bitter, angry, non-Christian people in their late teens and early twenties who are looking at this world and all its hate and fear and violence and thinking, “There COULDN’T be a God here.”
Now, I respect your use of free speech and freewill just as much as anybody’s - but if you really want to make a positive difference, don’t play into that hatred and fear and violence. THAT is what will ruin the young minds of this country, not some silly game.

Look, I am a Christian. I have been my entire life. I’ve studied evolution and while it is a very interesting theory, it’s still just that… a theory… just like Creationism. You can believe in a theory as being true. I do. I believe that an intelligent being (God) created us. That’s just my personal belief. I don’t press this on others and other than sharing what I believe, I let others make up their own minds. Now… with that out of the way…
You are fighting a losing battle. I understand what you are doing here. And I can appreciate it to an extent but this is the internet. I’m sure you read all of the above comments ( a few good ones scattered amongst trash and mouth vomit) and can easily see that this isn’t going to sway anyone.
Further more, I don’t agree with your stance. I own the game, and in fact bought it the very morning it came out. And while it does use evolution as a tool to drive the game, it actually promotes more creationism than evolution.
Think about this. If I started up the game, and then just let it sit there, would it create a creature? No. Someone would have to take the time to intelligently create the creature… ok so lets say for the sake of argument that we load one of the pre-existing creatures and then leave it there. Would it evolve into the next stage of evolution? No. You, the player, have to take the time to think about how the pieces fit together and what is the best combination to make this creature successful. Intelligent design. With out the player the game can’t do anything. Yes the game does use evolution as a means to tell the story but as a teaching tool it falls flat on it’s face in light of the fact that it’s a game. Evolution is a theory with many many many holes. Like wise Creationism is a theory with many holes (although I’d argue less than Evolution). I highly doubt this game will do anything to promote evolution.
As far as Will Wright claiming that spore creators did what God did in 18 days… it’s a cute marketing stunt but let’s be honest with ourselves… There is no one person or even group of people that can do what God has done on ANY scale. So in this case you just smile and shake your head and move on.
Again. Appreciate your enthusiasm on this subject, but I consider your view point weak and uninformed. My advice to you is to either play the game or watch the game being played while leaving your faulty preconceived notions at the door. And then afterward drawing your conclusions.

First off, I think this is pretty bad that Will Wright is equating his players with god in such an obvious antagonistic way. It is attacks like these that keep evolution/creation such a hate fueled debate.
Don’t you think it is possible to believe that god did design humans by the process of evolution? Not to say that he had a bunch of flawed versions that led to us (who are perfect?) because we have a lot of flaws in our design too. One being that our upright manner of walking leads to knee problems later in life.

I am a religious person. I find that lately, the way that some people attack the theory of evolution, which i believe to be sound theory, then my reaction is to want to distance myself from religion. You are having a negative result on moderate people who want to be able to be religious but not completely block themselves from all science.
I would like to recommend a book, “Finding Darwin’s God.” I am sure you will have big problems with it. But it is an interesting read. Maybe take it out of the library (that way you are not supporting it monetarily) and I would be interested to know what you think. Please try to make it through the book though. The first third of it is more making the case for evolution, the second third addresses religion and the last third ties it all together.

I downloaded the creature creator for my son… he thinks it’s great fun making monsters and dinosaurs with it, and amazingly enough he is not confused at all by the game. Maybe instead of wasting space on the internet you should sit down with your kids, play these games, and watch movies, but explaining appropriate behavior, and discussing the differences between the real world and games/movies… actually someone would need to have this talk with you… first…

Listen I am both a Christian and a Video Games Designer and all I can say is A) Huh and B) Huh? For the record I believe that Spore is actually a game about intelligent design and not evolution. If you played it you would realize that you do not evolve automatically you actually have to do something for the creature to survive. This is Intelligent Design in action… Granted the game is a God simulator just as “Black and White” or the “Sims” so maybe you have issues with that, but please play the game and then make an informed decision.

I find it humorous that if we truly were made in God’s image, that there would be anything wrong with wanting to immolate his creative behaviors. While I guess I can understand why a conservative minded person would take issue with an entertaining game, I cannot understand a few things.
First, this video of Wil Wright is from quite some time ago, I believe a few months ago he said this in regards to the creature creator.
Second, this is one of very few games that does not preach a path of violence at every turn. If you would like to direct righteous anger, why not crusade against a game like Overlord that encourages a person to act evil for personal gain? Or is that game not popular enough to drive hits to your little blog here?
Third, by any catholic standards I’ve ever experienced (and I was born and raised, every Sunday for almost 18 years now) God modeled man in his own image, God created all living things. So by Mr. Wright stating that as a community, we are 38% of God, I believe that is quite a compliment. We were created in his image, and are creating in his image.
Finally, God saw fit to create almost all species with male and femal reproductive organs, and made the use of these organs essential to our survival as a species. Why is it always so concerning to prudish minds that people understand this and feel the need to run down creations that use these reproduction organs? Yes, certain creatures in spore go overboard, but no more overboard than creating a blog to run this game that has so many positive features into the ground no?

The theory of evolution is a proven fact (by many fields of science) and thus a scientific theory (which is true until other facts turn up that either support it or call for adjustments.)
As for this blog: It is narrow minded and an insult to atheists. But religious people seem to be free to insult anyone who beliefs something else than themselves, especially toward atheists.

It is a game! A silly thing people do to pass the time, a toy. Why are you taking it so seriously. It’s not like Will Wringt wants to convert the whole world to his views, he has simply made a funny product.
Also, the video of a young girl you portray in one of your previous posts, is not an example of how Spore corrupts children. If you had listened to what the girl is explaining, she is using Spore to demonstrate something she has learned elsewhere. The game is a demonstration tool, not something that has changed the girl’s views.

Another point that should be made is that evolution can intermingle with creationism. Okay, so big bang, supposing it happened… who/what created to possibility for it to happen? Even if we evolved from apes, or that we are an experiment by aliens, who created infinite possibility?

I am a Christian, have been all my life. That said, I would like to use the argument against you, who hate evolution, as I use against people who hate creationism. Can’t evolution be the answer to “how” and not to “why?” I understand if you take every page of the Bible as literal, then you can’t wrap your head around this question, but if you take the Bible as literal then I invite you to read through some of the wackier rules in Leviticus, including but not limited to “you are a sinner if you wear a shirt made of two types of cloth,” “you are a sinner if you sow a crop with two different types of seeds,” and “rebellious teens are to be beaten to death with stones.”
