In the game you can design a creature, the fact that someone has designed a creature that looks like it has a penis doesn’t make the game bad. In the same way that using a paper and pencil to draw a creature with a penis makes paper and pencils unacceptable for children. You can’t blame the tool that someone uses, your issue is with the creator of the creature in question.
Seriously the idea behind your site is a bit mislead and makes your posts are making you look quite stupid.

Your issue is still with the original creator of the questionable “creature.”
And yes, he could have excluded some ‘features’ from the game, but last I recall, we do live in a self-proclaimed free society where one is allowed to express their thoughts without censure.
If you dislike the game, you are certainly free to express your thoughts as such… and as a parent, you definitely have the right to keep what you’d consider questionable materials away from your children.
But, on the flip side of that same coin, we also have the right to think that you’re extremely narrow-minded on the subject.
That you’re drawing negative sentiment also means that we do not appreciate your attempt at censure. I agree that the ESRA rating may have been in error considering some of the possible contents, but that has little to do with the game or its creator.
With a lot of lego you could create a gigantic penis which would have a lot of detail.
As a rebuff, I’d like to note that there are measures in place to prevent children from seeing any naughty creations. Quoting from the Wiki article:
‘There will be a parental control toggle which allows the player to restrict what downloadable content will be allowed; choices include: “no user generated content”, “official Maxis-approved content”, “downloadable friend content” (named “buddy” in the final game), and “all user-created content”. So all that talk of how evil Will Wright is for not “creating technology” is just a show of poor research. If anything naughty reaches kids in Spore, it’s the fault of the parents for not using the tools provided to them by the game’s creators. Or even (gasp!) for buying them a game like this in the first place.
Actually they do go through and remove those kinds of aliens before they make it into the general database. That was made common knowledge when the creature creator came out months ago. Well before the game Launched.

Admin, You fail to see how hard it would be to program something to block out certain shapes. There are an almost endless way to combine the things. You would have to go through and imagine/create every single combination and set up code to stop that from happening. It isn’t very easy at all.
Also, it is not the fault of the creator that people misuse his program. He created it to be a fun game, that you can have endless fun with.

The game allows the player to ban any content they believe to be inappropriate. The main content base is also checked for inappropriate data and users can flag this content resulting in its removal. The spore team has done everything possible to protect users from this content, and still allow for users to fully express there creativity.
The things people create are not populated throughout your game unless you specifically set it to do that in the options. By default, it only shows you content created by yourself and by Maxis. It is for this reason that the ESRB rated this game ‘E’ with a specific clause that ONLINE INTERACTION is not and cannot be rated by the ESRB. They rate what comes in the box, not what can be added to the game through an internet connection because there is no way to anticipate what that might be. A good parent concerned for their child’s exposure to various types of media would make sure to be knowledgeable of these things, and to moderate the parental controls on games such as this.
Another thing… Spore can be as much about intelligent design as it can be about evolution. In fact, it’s more about intelligent design than it is evolution, as you the player control every aspect of the creatures ‘evolution’. You are the intelligent designer. If you have any problem with the high concept of the game it should be that Wil Wright is allowing people to ‘play God’.
Further proof you haven’t played the game, you can block said creations. Way to go, another uninformed idiot on the internet ranting and raving about things he knows nothing about.

I’d have to agree wholeheartedly with Steve on this one ‘admin’. His logic is sound and you can’t argue the facts. Truth is that the medium that was created here was designed for the most flexibility in design as possible. You assume that the design team could have created technology to sensor the creations but unfortunately there is no backing for that assumption. In fact, I could see that as being extremely difficult. On top of which, the Spore website where the creatures can be uploaded and shared is monitored for racist/sexual creations and are taken down. Repeat offenders have their accounts banned.

EA cannot be held responsible for what users (human beings like you and me) create with the tools (the game) they give you.

But to be completely serious, I hope you’re aware that EA filters through the monsters and makes sure none of the inappropriate creatures are available online. So children are (theoretically) safe from everything except their own imagination. If there are any inappropriate creatures online at the moment, it’s simply because the game had just become available. I’d give it a week or so before the servers are completely clean.

Yes he has. Before you can use a creature someone else has made you have to manually download it from Spore-o-pedia, which is a monitored collection of spore creatures with dedicated moderators that will delete inappropriate material and ban those users that make it.
Uh, there’s options in Spore to only download from your friends.

If you take a closer look, EA has implemented a system which tries it’s best to prevent content deemed “inappropraite” from getting into the ‘Sporepedia’, issuing warnings and eventual banning if people continue to contradict this policy.

First off, things which are found to be “adult” in the spore player creature catalog are deleted. Do not try and say they aren’t because they are and there is much proof out there to show it. The vast majority of these videos are made by people who have either created the creature themselves or are spreading them just because they think it’s funny.
Secondly, there are legos which are square, round, cylnder shaped and triangular. Believe me, “sinful” things can most certainly be made with them.

I’ve played Spore for the best part of two months on the pre-release demo and not once have I been compelled to create something that even remotely resembles male or female genitalia.

I certainly don’t think that if I were back to my nine year old self and playing Spore I’d be creating penis monsters as soon as I loaded up the game. Spore is designed to filter out offensive creatures from being downloaded, I’ve been playing it the last few days and I have yet to see anything remotely offensive. This website is pointless, there is a system in place to prevent this and thus far it has worked fairly well. Then I read what you had to say about Will Wright and.. could you be a bigger bigot? these contents cannot actually be downloaded into the game. The Sporepedia has a system to not let this kind of content into the actual game on people’s computers. Users creating such creatures and uploading them will have their accounts blocked. Please get your details straight before you start setting up an entire website revolving around this ridculous “scandal.” The youtube videos are not what is actually in the game.

If anything, Spore puts you in a position of God-like authority and it is your choices, not any form of Darwinian evolution, that alter the creature’s attributes, shape, behavior, etc.

Correct me if i’m wrong but i’ve read on multiple occasions that the game contains a filter functions for for explicit creations so people that enjoy that sort of humor can enjoy their creations while others can play in a land free of penis monsters.

Give people a tool for creation and they will use it in a variety of ways. Wether it’s a game, technology or a more traditional method, there will always be people that wish to use it for more explicit purposes. If thats not your thing then just ignore it (or rather use the filters to make the game ignore it), like you would with paintings, art, drawings, TV, movies and any other form of expression.
@Admin Just because lego is blocky it doesn’t mean it cant be used for explicit purposes. Believe me, if there’s a way, there’s at least ten people trying to do it.
Taking the game online is an option, not a requirement. Online content is not rated (it states that). It is up to your discretion as a parent whether to let your child get online with this game. Instead of making a blog about a harmless game why don’t you pay more attention to what options you have as a parent to protect your son from harmful content.

That is not as simple as it might seem to people who is not in the game making business. The concept of the creature creator is to be able to design whatever creature you want. Censoring it would mean a program that is able to scan the user model, detecting the crotch, and preventing any limbs or lumps to be created. Not only is this difficult considering the wide variety of creature combinations, but this would also remove the possibility of the user to be fully creative- what if I wanted to place a third leg sticking out of the crotch, or a tail?
The creature creator is a brilliant and illuminating idea. I applaud anything that helps kids to be creative, and anything keeping young kids away from violent games. It’s their choice to add penises, whats so wrong about that anyway? Half the people alive are born with them.

You can touch them, see them, and eat and drink them anywhere.
It’s up to who to resist temptation.

If parents are so concerned with their children playing this game, all they have to do is click the button. Odds are though, that parents just buy the game and let their kids go to town. In the game, you can choose to take on a religious role. Evolutionists and Athiests find that offensive. Athiests have even gone as far as try to fight will wright on the inclusion of religion in the game. The answer for them is to not choose to take on the religious role in the game. there’s also economist and military to choose from. Lots of choice for everybody so that everybody will be happy in some form or another.
Oh, another point to make is that you can make it so the game ONLY adds in content from your friends list and the Maxis devs list. so you can control every aspect of the game, keeping out anything you may find offensive.

There’s a feature in the game to turn off downloadible content. You can make it so that no creatures from other computers show up in yours.
Also, the game not only has a “10 and up” rating, but I believe was mostly designed for adults to have fun and play around with. Video games aren’t just for children, you know. The average age of the video gamer has slowly climbed over the last decade, I believe it now stands at something like 25.

You can choose to only download creatures from people on your friends list. Upon turning this on, you won’t ever see things like this, unless the people you add create them. And if they do, delete them as a friend, and it’s gone.
The whole point of the website is quite misleading. These things are not a “part” of the game. They are created by players, and shared. But, as I’ve just stated, are not required to download, or ever needed to be seen to play the game.

The creatures aren’t automatically downloaded into other people’s universes until they have been reviewed by the creators MAXIS. Trust me when I say you’ll never see this in your game unless you CHOOSE to download it or make it yourself.
And for Will Wright to block this feature would limit the game immenseley to the point of it not being intuitive or fun.

Actually, admin, you can “ban” creatures from your spore universe and you can choose not to download anyone else’s creatures. These options protects people from “harmful” creatures. If, instead, you are in fact suggesting that Will Wright could have created technology that would block inappropriate creatures automatically, that would be incredibly complex, if not impossible to program. A computer cannot tell what is obscene, the program would have to be told what was obscene but then if you were trying to tell it that phallic shaped objects were obscene then there would be no antennae or things of the like.

Additionally, being a software developer, I can tell you now that it would be near impossible to implement anti-phallic measures into a graphic game. There are safeguards in the game against this kind of creature reaching the general population. Say you saw a creature that was annoying in nature or offensive in nature, the user can very easily flag this creature. This brings attention to the people at EA who moderate this game. Whether or not these people are demons are not remains a valid debate, but whatever their judgment is on the creature will determine whether or not it will remain in the game visible to players.
If a small boy plays this game and makes penises and other such “offensive” things maybe their parents should take an active, loving, and educational role in their life and explain to them what these parts of their body are for. Maybe that way they won’t take things like sex lightly and will begin to realize the repercussions of pregnancy, marriage, and family life a lot earlier in life, therefore enriching the child.
Why does everyone have to be so negative? I remember finding some inappropriate comics that belonged to my father as a child. This opened up a dialog that was healthy with my parents. lego: peope have recreated about anything manmade in lego. the fact that you have yet to see a giant vagina / penis out of lego is not that the design of lego prevents people from creating these things in great detail - because you can. edges disappear more and more the farther you move away from an object so if you would build the rough shape of a penis at a 20cm scale and walked back 5meters - by the miracle of optics you would not see the edges of the legopieces and the penisshaped object would appear auite mmore lifelike than from a close distance.

Spore has the option to block creatures from being downloaded to your computer by denying certain keywords and phrases that the creatures themselves are designed. You can block the game from connecting to the internet completely.

Admin, As I understand it if you are presented with a creature you don’t like you can ‘ban’ it so that it doesn’t appear in your game. To moderate every other users creation would be completely unmanageable and this post moderation system is the type of moderation that most forums use and it works for them, offensive material is removed without the delay and overhead associated with moderating every submission.
To decide the game is bad because it can be used to create something you don’t approve of is daft. It’s another one of those ridiculous situations where someone tries to ban or restrict something because a small minority of people can potentially abuse it.

First, let me say I’m glad to see you deleted my last post. That’s certainly one way to win an argument. Since I’m not sure which part of my post offeneded you sensibilities, I’ll not post any links to giant lego block like scuplctures resembling naked women or the mention of Richard Bachman’s particular brand of religion. I’ll only reiterate this:
Saying this game and its creator are evil because of what someone can/might/has made with it, is like Marvel getting up set at Crayolla because kids can use their products to draw copywritten Marvel superheroes. Or getting angry at your god, Yahweh, because he/she/it created clay and lots of nekidness and naughtiness has been sculpted in clay.
so… who created these videos? Are you secretly at home playing this game, making naked creatures with large phallic parts and uploading it to your site? don’t be embarrassed. god forgives people who spew falsehoods.
Actualy to put you in the wrong even more Admin, you can also set it up where you can download only your buddies creations or none at all. I do have stuff setup and if I see something I don’t like, I ban it. Simple self moderation. But since you haven’t played this game your opinions are jack crap.
and to wahahahah: part of the brilliant design of Lego is that the shapes of the pieces prevent children from creating anything sinful.
